Local Area

Blackhead has a permanent population of about 50 people, although it does swell to about 200 on weekends and holidays in summer. Beaches, national parks, craft markets, a bowling club and cafes – read on for more!

The Beaches

I hope you like beaches because Bruce’s Beach House has no shortage of them nearby! The main swimming beach starts just 50 metres’ walk from the front door, and is patrolled by Blackhead Surf Lifesaving Club over Summer. It’s well protected from the wind, and never really gets crowded.

North of the swimming area, depending on the time of day you can usually find a few people fishing or surfing.

A short 600m walk/drive to the South is the unpatrolled “Back Beach.” Stretching along Darawank Nature Reserve all the way down to Tuncurry, this beach is a favourite with local surfers.

Heading a little further out you have quick access to the popular Diamond Beach to the North, and if you head South you will find all the beaches in the Forster-Tuncurry area, popular with holidaymakers.

Finally, if waves aren’t your thing then there is the ocean pool in front of the Lifesaving Club for a relaxing dip or a couple of laps.

National Parks

There are three walking trails all within close proximity to Blackhead Beach, showcasing beautiful littoral rainforest and coastal landforms:

  1. To the North you can walk through the Blackhead Flora Reserve along the lagoon then looping back around to the beach.
  2. North of Blackhead Beach you can explore the Red Head Rainforest Reserve and Shelly Beach.
  3. The top of the hill just south of the beach marks the entrance to the Blackhead Rainforest Reserve (including lookout points). The trails take you down to Back Beach and through a bit of the Darawank Nature Reserve.
